A FOCUS ON BIOFUELS
Renewable fuels are an important source of energy due to their sustainability, low contributions to the carbon cycle, and reduced greenhouse gases.
The most common types of biofuels used today are ethanol, biodiesel and renewable diesel. Other examples of advanced biofuels:
- rDME
- Drop-in hydrocarbons
- Marine / Maritime Fuel
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
- Bio-isobutanol
- Renewable Natural Gas

ETHANOL
- Made from feedstocks such as corn, barley, sugarcane and trees
- Fermentation is the most common method for fuel ethanol production
- Used as a blending agent with gasoline to increase octane & cut down emissions
BIODIESEL
- Made from any feedstock containing free fatty acids; soybean oil, grease and fats
- Cleaner alternative to petroleum based diesel
- Blended with petroleum diesel to fuel diesel engines
RENEWABLE DIESEL
- Made from waste products such as animal fats, grease and cooking oils
- Drop-in substitute for petroleum diesel engines
- Requires no modifications to pipelines

CHALLENGES
Handling fluids like vegetable oil comes with a complex set of challenges for optimum valve performance. Corrosion resistance is a major challenge because vegetable oil contains free fatty acids. Additionally, the presence of contaminants in the feedstock can negatively affect the catalyst. Valve selection is of utmost importance when designing a biofuels plant.

LADISH SOLUTIONS
Proper selection of materials in valve construction can overcome many challenges presented in bioethanol and/or biodiesel applications. Our engineers are application specialists ready to help with new biofuel projects and biofuel plant conversions and expansions.
