The Valve Material Selection Process

The valve selection process is complex. A few material selection considerations should be pressure, temperature, type of fluid (liquid or natural gas, dirty or abrasive, corrosive), and operating conditions. Operation conditions could be comprised of NACE requirements, shut-off requirements, thermal shock, frequency of operation and fire safe requirements. Process compatibility and severe defining characteristics also drive material selection. Does the application require a material that resists corrosion or erosion? What strength does the material need to be? Is it suitable for design temperature and Thermal Flux? Regarding severe defining characteristics, are there options?

All of our valves meet the following design codes and standards.

  • API
  • Company Standards
  • ANSI/ASME
    • Power Boilers – Section I
    • Pressure Vessels – Section VIII (1 & 2)
    • Piping Code – B31.3
    • Flange Ratings – B16.5
    • Valves – B16.34

NACE Compliance
  • MR0175 – Upstream Standard: Materials for use in H2S-containing environments in oil & gas production
  • MR0103 – Downstream Standard: Materials resistant to sulfide stress corrosion cracking in corrosive petroleum refining environments

An important fact that should not be overlooked is the fact that it is the end user’s / specifier’s responsibility to ensure that a material will be satisfactory in the intended environment. When specified, it is the manufacturer’s responsibility for meeting the metallurgical requirements of the standard. It is widely misunderstood as too often the interpretation of the user is that is NACE material is specified, that metal is suitable for all H2S-containing and potential SCC environments. IT is critical to understand the design process conditions and maximum partial pressure of H2S.
